In the bustling metropolis of Chongqing, a transformative urban planning initiative known as the ’15-minute life circle’ is reshaping community living. This concept aims to provide residents with access to essential services—such as groceries, healthcare, education, and recreational facilities—within a 15-minute walk from their homes.
Bringing Services Closer to Home
Since its rollout in 2025, the ’15-minute life circle’ has been implemented across 65 key areas in Chongqing, creating a community service network that now covers 276 neighborhoods and serves over 3.1 million residents. This people-centered approach integrates consumption, convenient services, and cultural experiences, meeting lifestyle needs like shopping, leisure, elderly care, and exercise within a short walk from people’s homes.
Community-Centric Development
In Yuzhong District’s Hualongqiao Subdistrict, the impact of the ’15-minute life circle’ is evident for office workers. The neighborhood has been revitalized with updated market streets, new cafés, and shared public plazas. Community centers nearby offer fitness classes, children’s activities, and programs for seniors—all within a short stroll from home.
Enhancing Quality of Life
By embedding public services into neighborhoods and improving accessibility, Chongqing’s ’15-minute life circles’ are turning policy initiatives into tangible benefits. The approach is helping create more convenient, inclusive, and people-centered urban communities, offering practical experience for improving urban living in large cities.
As a resident of Chongqing, I’ve personally experienced the positive changes brought about by this initiative. The convenience of having essential services within a short walk has not only saved time but also fostered a stronger sense of community among neighbors. It’s heartening to see our city prioritize the well-being and convenience of its residents through thoughtful urban planning.
