In the bustling city of Chongqing, a transformative initiative known as the ’15-minute life circle’ is reshaping urban living. This concept ensures that residents can access essential services—such as education, healthcare, childcare, and cultural activities—within a 15-minute walk from their homes. Since its rollout in 2025, the program has benefited more than 3.1 million people, according to Gao Jian, Director of the Chongqing Municipal Development and Reform Commission.
One notable example is the ‘Yuhao Space’ in Nanqiaosi Community, Liangjiang New Area. This facility integrates childcare services with community dining, providing affordable daily care and meals for families. Low-income and disadvantaged families receive these services free of charge, fostering inclusivity and support within the community.
To ensure the sustainability of such initiatives, Chongqing has adopted a model that combines public welfare with market-based operations. In Zhengjie Community, Tongliang District, the ‘Yuhao Space’ incorporates various services, including property management, teahouses, and supermarkets. This approach has created a positive commercial cycle, with the station’s revenue exceeding 1.2 million yuan by 2025, ensuring the continuity of essential services.
By revitalizing underused community spaces and embedding public services into neighborhoods, Chongqing’s ’15-minute life circles’ are enhancing the quality of urban life. This people-centered approach not only makes daily life more convenient but also fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility among residents.
